At Nightcliff Preschool, we value each child and their individuality. We have a strong play-based approach which allows all preschoolers to develop the skills they require at their own pace and in a safe, secure and kind environment. We feel that a child's early learning years are a partnership between the child, parents and the preschool staff. We have an open door policy and welcome parents at any time during their child's preschool session.
When can your child start pre-school? If your child turns four by June 30th in the year of their attendance, they are able to begin preschool at the start of the school year. Enrolments are taken in Term 4 and an Open Day for prospective students and their parents is held.
Open Door Policy
Parents are always welcome to participate in the pre-school program and you are invited to stay with your child as long as you feel s/he needs your support. Children must be brought into Preschool and collected by an adult. If someone else is picking up your child please let us know. Please be on time to collect your child at the end of their session. We only have one hour between the morning and afternoon sessions. We need to have a break and set up the classrooms ready for the next session.
There are some jobs that we need help with in the preschool. These include preparing morning and afternoon tea, weekly washing (to be picked up on Friday), a library volunteer for each group and occasional help covering books and maintaining resources. We will place a roster for the weekly washing and for snack preparation on the notice board on the verandah.
We would love you to take an active role in our Preschool as this is an important way of belonging to our school community. Your participation is encouraged and valued; feel free to stay and join in anytime. We also welcome your feedback and suggestions to improve our preschool.
At Nightcliff we provide a child-centred educational program aimed at developing your child’s skills across a broad range of areas. We follow the Early Years Learning Framework and activities are directly related to the children’s interests and abilities. Each pre-school session follows a structure which allows children opportunities to engage in a wide range of indoor and outdoor experiences. We run a play based program with a focus on open-ended activities.
Mary and Charlotte have programming and planning time on Thursday and Friday during which time the classes will be taken by Mrs Williams.
Voluntary Parent Contributions
The Voluntary Parent Contribution is $90 per term. We use this contribution to provide morning and afternoon snacks for the children, art and craft supplies, cooking ingredients, books, puzzles and equipment. The Department of Education only supply a small portion of our running costs, so we really appreciate your contribution. This can be paid at the front office by cash, cheque and credit card or by Direct Deposit into the school’s NAB account. Please see the front office for details.
We have a parent committee at Preschool and we hope that you will be a part of it. Committee meetings are held on a regular basis. Everyone is welcome to attend; all parents are automatically members of the Committee. The committee decides on fundraising and social activities on behalf of the parent body.
The Preschool has a lovely library from which you are most welcome to borrow. Borrowing day is Wednesday. Please bring a library bag, pillow case or plastic bag with your child’s name on it. Books borrowed will be recorded and marked off when returned. We need a parent volunteer to organise this process at the beginning of the session.
Frozen Fruit Sticks
Frozen fruit sticks are a tradition at preschool and raise quite a bit of revenue for extra resources. We sell them on Thursday for $1 each. You can pay per week or per term.
Hats and Sunscreen – “No Hat – No Play”
Students need to wear a broad brimmed hat to Preschool every day. If your child does not have a hat, and we do not have a spare hat (which can happen) your child will have to play in the undercover area when we have outside time.
You may wish to put sunscreen on your child before attending Preschool. Preschool staff are not permitted to apply sunscreen to students.
There are sometimes many mosquitoes around during the wet season so you may like to apply insect repellent to your child.
Uniforms are popular at Preschool but not compulsory. School uniforms are available for purchase in the front office. Sometimes it’s quite cold in the air-conditioning and you may want to pack a jacket/cardigan for your child. We encourage children to wear covered shoes for safety reasons.
Water and Food
We have cold water bubblers inside and outside that are easily accessible to the children. There is no need to send a water bottle or any other drink to Preschool. We provide fruit and snacks for the children.
Please let us know if your child is allergic to anything including band aids, foods and plants. We need to know if your child has any medical issues and if they suffer with asthma there needs to be a medical plan to follow in an emergency situation. This needs to be written by your doctor and we are required to keep a copy at the Preschool.
We have a shallow pool that is used during outside sessions (weather permitting). Your child needs a named towel, bathers, goggles (optional) and a plastic bag for their wet things. We will say “no swimming” if your child doesn’t have their towel. The Preschool cannot provide a towel. Swimming day will be Friday. We will let you know when swimming will start. The Preschool also participates in school swimming lessons held at the beginning of Term 2.
Boxes and Recyclables
If you have empty boxes such as cereal boxes, clean yogurt containers, meat trays, scraps of fabric, corks, lids and buttons, and any other interesting packaging we would love to have them for our ‘making table’. For hygienic reasons we cannot accept toilet rolls. We also need terracotta and ceramic
