Attendance

Make Every Day Count

In our busy lives ,getting to school every day can certainly be a challenge although there are very important statistics that identify how missing school days can create academic and social learning difficulties as students move through their schooling years.

Children can suffer academically if they miss up to 10 per cent of their school days or about 18 days per school year. That can be just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it. This also is a key concern for students who arrive late to school. It doesn’t matter if these absences are excused or unexcused. They all represent lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity to learn.

  • Attendance matters as early as transition. Studies show many children who miss too many days in transition ,including first grade can struggle academically in later years. They often have trouble mastering reading by the end of third grade.
  • Preschool is a great time to start building a habit of good attendance. Studies show that poor attendance in preschool can predict absenteeism in later grades.
  • By middle and high school, chronic absence is a leading warning sign that a student will struggle and find it difficult to understand academic concepts required at this level.
  • Students who are late to class can affect the whole classroom, unsettling the class and slowing down daily instructions.
